Old city of ancient origin, Vias is mentioned for the first time into 899, in a charter of évêché of Agde: the stronghold of Vias originates in an old Gallo-Roman villa resulting from the Roman colonization of soil. However, the occupation of the territory is much older: traces of habitat chalcolithic (2000 years before J.C.) were found on the sides of the extinct volcano Castling-High, as well as testimonys of the passage into 600 before J.C of Greek navigators. In XIIème century appears the castrum (strengthened village) with its ramparts built out of volcanic stone who give to the village his very characteristic round form. At that time, one reaches the borough by four doors with drawbridge, whose only the door of St-Thibéry remains.
