It is one of the vastest monastic cities of the Christian Occident. Mixed order directed by an abbess, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud was rested by Robert d' Arbrissel in 1101. The guards of the Abbey are the Counts of Anjou then their descendants Plantagenêt, kings d' Angleterre. In the abbey one rests the lying ones of Henry II Plantagenêt, of Aliénor of Aquitaine, their son Richard Lion Heart and Isabelle of Angouleme. The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is classified with the world inheritance of UNESCO.
