Nevers faïance

Closed by Porte du Croux which evokes the limits of the medieval city, the district of the Faience manufacturers is situated in the west of La Butte.

Coming from Italy on the invitation of the duke Louis de Gonzague, the first faience manufacturers settle in Nevers at the end of XVIth century. Their reputation and their success transformed Nevers in the earthenware French Capitale ( XVIIth century). Of twelve manufactures in the XVIIIth century, only one survived the economic difficulties of the XIXth century. Nowadays five workshops perpetuate earthenware art in Nevers.
