It is because it overlooks the Adour valley, offering a gorgeous view of the entire Landes plain, that the Romans had given the name of " Caput Vasconiae " (Cape of Gascony) to the plateau where they had established the " Palestrion " or governor’s palace. A city developed around it, where, in 988, was founded an important abbey which extended over a large part of Gascony. In that monastery was illuminated the Apocalypse manuscript in the 11th century.
In the 13th century, another brick monastery, its church with a unique nave, whose visible framework has the shape of a turned over ship keel, was erected outside the fortifications.
